Hunting Tips & Tactics

The Ring-necked Duck is a small diving duck. The male can be easily identified by the purplish black gleaming head and the signature white ring across the front of the bill.

Unlike other species of diver ducks, the Ring-necked duck can commonly be found on smaller bodies of water such as beaver ponds, marshes and even cattle ponds. Although their diet is mostly made up of mollusks and invertebrates, they are especially fond of wild rice and celery found in the northern lakes. They often travel in pairs and small flocks.

The Ring-necked duck will decoy well to a small spread set up in the right location of an area they want to feed in. Although they are a quick little duck, commonly known to zip in and out of a spread, they are very susceptible to decoys if positioned in their feeding area. They are not species specific and are known to land and intermingle amongst many different species of ducks.

The Ring-necked duck is a relatively good tasting duck and since they have a higher than average nesting success rate, unlike many of the other diver ducks, the Ring-neck duck is not commonly constricted by limiting the specific number of species specific birds that can be harvested inside the daily bag limit amount in most states.
